A Midsummer Night's Dream 《仲夏夜之梦》-Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre Designing for the Bard, Summer 2020

By  William Shakespeare

In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare has portrayed characters either madly in love, trapped in love or craving for love. Love has many facets; characters in the play have become absorbed, oblivious to the dark side of love. This version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is set with a Gothic theme to reflect one’s darkest consciousness. Love in this world is not only dedication or giving but rather hegemony and selfishness.

Because of jealousy, Theseus punishes Hippolyta unscrupulously; because of self-regard, Helena abandons her value of being a good friend; because of arrogant, Lysander and Demetrius are willing to sacrifice themselves. Love manipulates and drags everyone into Hell of suffering, heartbreaking and even the cost of life.

The scenic concept comes from the aesthetic experience of proportion, light and color. The palace has become a Gothic architecture; all forests have become a graveyard. The scale contrast between the human beings and the surrounding environment is a warning; colors are a scarce element for all livings; and absolute rules of symmetrical are the shackles of souls.

As for the costuming, fairies have a gold highlight within their costumes, dressed in more decorative accessories; for their powers to control over human. For the nobles, military clothing style dominate the body shape, symbolize they are restricted and being watched by the Gods. The Revels‘are inspired by the style of the blue-collar workforce with cargo pants and overalls. This informal style of dress shows that their social levels and their free souls.
